Overview

Deer overpopulation has been identified as a contributing factor to ecological imbalance, property damage, and the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in the region. At the same time, tick-borne illnesses continue to pose health risks to residents of Prince William County. In light of these concerns, it is important for the Board to receive an updated report from staff on both the status of deer management efforts and the latest information on tick-borne diseases affecting the county. Such information will help guide future discussions and policy decisions regarding effective management strategies. The County Executive is directed to have staff prepare and present an update on deer management and the status of tick-borne diseases in Prince William County. The County Executive should also evaluate the feasibility of scheduling a Board work session to allow for more detailed discussion of the information and possible next steps. The County Attorney’s Office is directed to review any recommendations arising from this work for legal considerations. When the report and analysis are complete, the County Executive should bring the information back to the Board, either as part of a scheduled meeting or by memorandum, as they determine appropriate.
