Overview

Community gardens provide great opportunities to connect with neighbors and others in the community, improve the environment, provide education, and create access to locally grown and environmentally sustainable foods. Prince William County currently supports a community garden at Veterans Park, and there are other County-owned properties with the potential to support additional community gardens. The County Executive is directed to work with staff to explore options for establishing two additional community gardens on County-owned property and report back to the board with recommendations. Consideration should be given to, among other things, one-time and recurring costs to develop, maintain, and operate the gardens, potential partnerships with private organizations, and assessing community demand, as well as any insurance implications. The County Attorney’s Office is directed to review the information and recommendations for any legal issues. When the research and work is complete, the County Executive should report back to the Board with the analysis and recommendations during a Board meeting or by memorandum, as they determine appropriate.
