Overview

On October 20, 2020, the Board of County Supervisors (Board) created a Racial and Social Justice Commission to examine the state of racial and social justice for people of color in the areas of policing, the provision of government services, and public education, subject to the establishment of a partnership with the Prince William School System. Since that time the Commission has held meetings and issued a report with findings. I greatly appreciate the work of the Commission and the staff of the Office of Human Rights and the Office of Equity and Inclusion who have supported the work of the Commission. Based on the broad scope of the statute governing the Human Rights Commission, it is appropriate at this time for the BOCS to consolidate the efforts of the two organizations. Therefore, without objection, I hereby direct the County Executive to work with staff, to prepare a resolution for the Board’s consideration that would dissolve the Racial and Social Justice Commission as a separate advisory body to the Board, and establish a new temporary Racial and Social Justice Task Force under the Human Rights Commission. Such recommended resolution should, where applicable, include timelines, fiscal impacts, and other pertinent impacts for Board consideration. The County Attorney’s Office is directed to review the information and recommendations for any legal issues. The County Executive should report back to the Board with his analysis and recommendations during a Board meeting. The County Executive will work with the Chair regarding the scheduling of the resolution.
